Roman Road Trust has worked with Old Ford Primary School and their artist in residence, Veronica Rowlands, to design a series of tote bags featuring children’s favourite parts of Roman Road.
The Roman Road Tote Bags have been designed by pupils attending ‘Room 13’ at Old Ford Primary School with help from local artist, Veronica Rowlands. Room 13 is an international initiative which encourages children to run their own art studios within their schools or community settings. The idea is for studios to run as businesses where funds are raised to purchase materials and employ an artist in residence to work with children.
There are four designs in the collection. Some illustrations depict the bustling Roman Road Market whilst others show our most well-known spaces such as the Idea Store Bow and the Roman Road Arch. The design featured above was created by Shayla and Tania. All designs have been screen-printed onto high quality cotton which can be used again and again.
By using cotton, the bags also encourage a reduction in the use of single-use plastics. This links into other local initiatives such as Plastic-free Roman Road. The bags also resonate with Key Idea 8 of the Roman Road Common Vision which aims to recycle and reduce waste in Roman Road.
The Roman Road Tote Bags is the first fundraising project to be launched by Room 13 at Old Ford Primary. The bags are on sale in a number of Roman Road businesses. All proceeds are going back into funding Room 13 with new art materials and providing educational visits.
