This year we have had some lovely additions to the Roman Road shop front festive decorations. Eleven of our businesses worked with designers make:good to create an East End Garland that is unique to them and celebrates the tools of their trade. Can you spot all 11 East End Garlands?
Make:good is a design and architecture studio which involves local communities to shape neighbourhood change. As part of their work with Tower Hamlets Town Centres, they have designed, created and installed East End Garlands across 21 businesses in Bethnal Green Road and Roman Road.
To explore what makes the businesses on Roman Road unique, make:good asked them ‘What are the tools of your trade?’ and ‘What can’t you do your work without?’. The responses were as diverse as the businesses they visited, and they photographed these collections of objects before creating drawings of them and transforming them into a set of unique festive decorations.
‘We loved getting to talk to the fantastic entrepreneurs running businesses and find out what tools, objects, products they need to be able to make their shops stand out. The diversity of all the objects was fantastic to see and it was a delight to turn these into decorations that are especially for them.’ Catherine & Nataly, make:good
Whilst every East End Garland is unique to each business, the trail of beautiful garlands has created a sense of community amongst businesses and provides a festive feast for the eyes of the Globe Town Christmas shopper.
Roman Road Trust hopes to continue to work with Make:good to bring East End Garlands to other businesses along Roman Road throughout the seasons.
Be sure to stroll down the Roman to enjoy the 11 East End Garlands in Globe Town and follow the trail to visit the 10 East End Garlands in Bethnal Green Road.
East End Garlands is funded by London Borough of Tower Hamlets, working in partnership with Roman Road Trust to improve local governance and support the delivery of regeneration initiatives in the Globe Town area of Roman Road West.
