Edible Bow Composting Day at Butley Court

posted in: Community | 0

The sun was shining for the launch of the Butley Court Composter on Saturday 9th June. To celebrate Edible Bow’s latest piece of gardening kit, a tumbling drum composter, Butley Court Orchard held a planting event. Residents from within the estates and further afield brought offerings of vegetable and fruit peelings to add to the green waste we collected from the garden.

By the end of the day the composting drum was almost full. After the event, the composter was returned to its home within the adventure playground, where residents can continue to dispose their kitchen waste. This composter gives Ranwell West residents the opportunity to compost their green waste, while also producing compost for the plants, bushes, and trees within the orchard. Local residents are welcome to bring along any green waste to the Butley Court Composter.

The trees that were planted last year within the orchard are already starting to bear fruit, with pears, apples and some bright red cherries appearing on the branches. The wild flowers that where planted during an event last year have also self seeded and come back, bigger and brighter along the line of the fence, between the edible hedge.

With over 50 volunteers we were able to lift the turf and plant out the sweet pea plants that had been brought in by local residents and the Orchard Ambassadors, a group of young residents who look after the garden. The sweet peas were planted around three bamboo teepees at the back of the garden and will provide a show of pink flowers later in the year.

Music was supplied by Markus Michelucci, who played at the very first Butley Court event. As always there was an amazing spread of food donated by businesses from along the Roman Road.

Thank you to Magus & the Fool Cafe, Symposium Deli & Restaurant, Loafing Crepe Cafe, Mae & Harvey, and Tolga Coffee Shop. Their kind donations made the launch of the composter a great success.
