Common Room clean up

posted in: Community | 0

If you’re an obsessive compulsive cleaner who loves a nice cuppa and a slice of cake, we have the perfect Saturday morning for you.

A small army of local volunteers will be heading to Roman Road car park to help spring clean the Common Room (the smallest civic hub in the world, or at least East London) and prepare for its re-opening. The Common Room will be available to hire for workshops and community meetings.

All volunteers will be rewarded for their hard work by a proper cup of tea and a huge slice of homemade cake, as well as some good banter with like-minded folk.

The Common Room was the result of an initiative which started in 2014 as part of a joint project between Roman Road Trust, London Metropolitan University, Clarion and the Council’s Enterprise Team.

The initiative gave twenty students from Cass School of Architecture the option to take a three-year course on Roman Road for their Fine Art and Architecture BA degree at London Metropolitan University. The students looked at ideas for reimagining the high street including improving shop frontage, use of pavements and public realm space, street furniture, empty shops and even pocket parks.

From this, the students designed and built (by hand!) the small community room which we now know as ‘The Common Room’ which is built on land owned by Clarion housing association. In 2017, Roman Road Trust collaborated with University East London BA Advertising student, Jess Currie, to create the design and brand of the new Common Room logo. The aim was to rebrand the space as part of the Roman Road Common project.

The Common Room has been used for many purposes as part of community events. The most well-known of its uses being Santa’s Grotto at the Roman Road Christmas Fair. However, Roman Road Trust is currently raising funds to turn this temporary community room into a permanent community building.

As part of this process, The Common Room needs a spring clean and refresh.
